Download BOS Wars 2.7 RTS for Windows

Image
BosWars Gameplay Bos Wars is still a nice fast-paced and somewhat lightweight RTS for you to enjoy, even though the sound mixing is still brutal but getting your hands on the latest Version for Windows is not as straightforward, as it was in 2010. Thankfully, you can get a working version for Windows from Portableapps . The cool 3D pixel soldier in the thumbnail above is from OpenGameArt by the way. Still kicking, old design and all. FreeDink Sound Design Replacements

Image
FreeDink Gameplay FreeDink is older than some kids that downloaded open source games on their own by now. The two main cornerstones of the game are: Low resolution, twisted humor. One really cool thing about FreeDink is that you can play it in a browser . Anyways, I worked on replacing some sounds years ago and just recently the same bug bit me again and I made replacements for all sounds that didn't have free versions of themselves yet. Freesound remix backtracking UI For creation, I remixed a *lot* of freesound.org sounds and uploaded all the remixes right back there . The attribution feature of Freesound is quite cool, especially if very different sounds are made (see screenshot above). However, I underestimated how much effort it takes to test them and to give some clarity to myself as well as share the process with the world, I made a video showing the steps taken for testing sounds: Sound Designer Job: How Testing SFX Replacements Works I could not have done it without the ex...

Wurmsyn - Retro Fantasy RTS

Image
Wurmsyn is fast-paced, tiny and has HUGE RPG-like scenarios. I don't quite understand how this game's pace is playable without exploiting things like turrets and how to play on a 1080p screen without touching it with your nose but I am impressed nonetheless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRhtbYjGkDQ I'd love some beginner entry levels but perhaps I'm just not the target audience. Wurmsyn is available on Steam  and uses the Workshop with 7 entries so far: Alternatively, you can download the game from https://github.com/Andrettin/Wyrmsun/releases - seems a bit confusing - you have to download the exe, the dll and extract the zip. run the exe in a command line to know how to use it (you have to use the -d parameter to show it where the data folder is (extracted zip)). Or build it yourself. One annoying thing about the engine is that it loads levels very slowly. I think this is because images are loaded separately rather than packages being used. Oh well. The project ha...

Godot Engine 3.1 Looks Amazing

Image
Godot 3.1 is not yet stable but a demo made for it looks like the engine could actually visually compete with Unity and Unreal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNeTHHTDYso The demo is available at GitHub , requires using an unstable build (unless you're building yourself) and the use of `git lfs clone https://github.com/godotengine/tps-demo.git`. Thanks to its Patreon project , Godot Engine makes about $8000 per month (nearly $96,000 per year - of course there are Patreon fees but there might be nonpublic donations/support as well), which allows it to be much more than a passion project. Godot is being legally represented by  Software Freedom Conservancy  (I recommend this fantastic podcast about it). One thing that bugs me about Godot right now is their download page: Specifically this: Put yourself into the shoes of somebody new to Godot. They want to download the engine of course. Let's assume they know the difference between 32 and 64 bit but how are they supposed to mak...

Sintel The Game has 3 playable Levels (Alpha 2)

Image
Sintel The Game Alpha 0.2 was released years ago but you might have missed it, just as have I. The three levels have the following features: 1. Snow landscape, puzzles, no fights, no ending (I think) 2. Desert landscape, no puzzles, 2 enemy types to fight, no ending (I think) 3. Village/port environment, one puzzle with one variation, 1 enemy type to fight (maybe more), has an ending, possibly has multiple endings (not tested). Gameplay Video As a game alpha, it is OK. As a alpha game made in Blender Game Engine (BGE), it is actually impressive: controls and window behavior feel OK, compared to smaller games I sometimes run into, which often seem to have resolution, mouse control/sensitivity or window manager related issues. And it looks nice. Download the Alpha (1GB) from  https://github.com/jonburesh/sintelgame/releases

Ancient Beast updated and the Deceiver

Image
Ancient Beast 0.3 is here ( blog post , forum announcement )! This gorgeously drawn game makes another step towards the vision of its developers. Heya! It’s been too long since the last release, about 3 years; long time indeed. We’ve finally repaired the prototype and added several new playable creatures, along with more features, goodies and bug fixes, not to mention that all the old units have been pretty much revamped. A ton of work, but it was totally worth it! Ancient Beast is a player vs player turn based strategy game played online where you command all manner of creatures (3D printed! Beware the power of playing God!) in a battle for supremacy amongst the ruins of the apocolypse. Or something like that. Sounds fun. :) Ancient Beast 0.3 Deceiver (formerly "The Yearning") has been rebranded in its latest update . GPL licensed code is available on github, and there's a steady history of updates going back 2 years, but the assets remain copyright of the developer. ...
